The Greenest Screen Is the One You Already Own
Most products treat the environment as a marketing afterthought, a badge on the box. ProtoModule treats it as a design constraint. The product makes screens do more work, and it's honest about what that means for the planet: every new display is a new LCD, and LCDs carry a real chemical footprint.
So the question isn't whether we care. It's whether the thing we build puts fewer displays in the world. That's the standard this page is written against.
The problem: LCDs leak
The case against new displays starts with the chemistry inside them. In 2019, a team of researchers published a peer-reviewed study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on the chemicals used in LCD screens (the study).
They analyzed 362 liquid-crystal chemicals used in LCD manufacturing. Nearly 100 of them have the potential to be toxic.
Then they went looking for those chemicals in the real world. Dust samples were collected from seven building types in China: a cafeteria, a student dorm, a classroom, a hotel, a home, a lab, and an electronics repair shop. Nearly half of the 53 samples tested positive for liquid-crystal particles, even in places where no LCD devices were present at collection time.
The reason is in how the screens are made. The chemicals are simply filled into the space between polarizers during manufacturing. They are not chemically bonded to any base material. So they can be released during production, through wastewater, during active use, disposal, or recycling, and they are vaporized during burning.
These particles don't break down quickly, and they have high mobility in the environment. When inhaled or ingested, they can build up in the body over time, with potential toxic effects including digestive problems. Lab testing found the hazardous substances similar to flame retardants, which disrupt digestive systems, gallbladders, and thyroids in animals.
Not exactly, and the study is careful about this. The researchers did not observe adverse health effects in humans from accumulation. What they established is that exposure is happening and that the chemicals have the potential to cause harm. There are no standards for measuring them and no regulations limiting exposure. That's the honest state of the science.
Why this is ProtoModule's problem to solve

What we don't claim
Repurposing a TV doesn't un-make the LCD already inside it. ProtoModule doesn't fix upstream manufacturing, doesn't solve e-waste alone, and no single device offsets the industry's footprint.
The claim is narrower and verifiable. ProtoModule adds one fewer display per use case, and it's built to be repaired rather than replaced. That's the value driver: modest, measurable, and real. It's the anti-placebo principle applied to the environment: we don't promise more than the product does.
That's the standard from the about page, carried into sustainability. No false buttons, no inflated promises. If a claim can't honestly be made, we don't make it.
